The Moto X Step Up is essentially a motorcycle high jump. The rider that clears the bar at its highest height brings home the X Games gold medal. The Step Up jump was larger this year than in years past. The 2011 jump was 13 feet tall and provided an 18 foot high landing. The 2010 jump offered a 10 foot tall jump and a 14 foot landing. Keep in mind that a taller jump offers a larger radius and a slightly longer path to gather speed.

After the dust cleared and the riders bones’ decompressed from the brutal landings, 31 year old Matt Buyten rolled away with X Games gold. Matt Buyten earned the victory with a jump of 37′ (37 feet measured from the floor of the stadium, not from the top of the jump). With a jump of 37′, Matt Buyten also claims the X Games Step Up record for highest jump. Buyten broke the record set by Tommy Clowers of 35′ set at the 2000 X Games (It should be noted that the X Games Step Up course in 2000 offered a much longer run before the jump. This longer run allowed the riders more speed in approaching the jump. But who is counting, right?).

Following in the footsteps of previous Red Bull athletes Robbie Maddison and Rhys Millen, Travis Pastrana will celebrate the arrival of 2010 by aiming to shatter the World Record for the Longest Distance Jump in a Rally Car. Pastrana will attempt to accomplish the first ever ramp-to-ramp car jump over water, a feat that will test the laws of physics and take his career to yet another level. With the world-famous Queen Mary docked in the background, Pastrana will jump his rally car off the Pine Street Pier onto a floating barge anchored in Long Beach’s Rainbow Harbor, aiming to shatter the existing mark of 171 feet and establish a new world distance record.

With four consecutive Rally America championships, nine X Games gold medals, the first double backflip on a motorcycle and a hit television series under his belt, it is safe to say that Travis Pastrana has reached the pinnacle of his career – and yet he’s showing no signs of slowing down anytime soon. In fact, on New Year’s Eve at Red Bull: New Year. No Limits., the action sports superstar will step on the accelerator and ring in 2010 by adding yet another jaw-dropping feat to his already impressive resume: the world record for longest distance jump in a rally car. Add a healthy dose of the Pacific Ocean to clear, and now you have a party!

Red Bull: New Year. No Limits. will be televised live on ESPN on Thursday, December 31. Viewing of Pastrana’s jump will be free to the thousands of revelers in downtown Long Beach.

Just for the sake of covering the most important detail first, this 3D experience is the real deal. If you have never seen a production using Disney’s Digital 3D technology, here is your excuse to check it out. While X Games 3D might eventually be released on DVD, the 3D experience is not going to happen in your living room (Translation - get yourself to a theater this weekend to see it).

In terms of the movie itself, there is a quandary for the action sports enthusiast - we already know happens. While I sat in awe of the presentation, I knew what was coming next and was almost mentally Tivo-ing past the gaps. That being said, the creators do a good job in re-packaging footage to create a real sense of drama for the Moto X Best Trick and Skateboard Big Air competitions. And while I am tempted to release spoilers, I will leave you with an axiom of action sports - sometimes the winner isn’t the champion.

While there might be some truth to the claim that the X Games 3D movie is little more than a 90 minute ESPN infomercial, it should also give you some perspective on how large action sports have become. The Summer X Games have been around for 15 years and the Winter X Games for 14 years. The Summer X Games are the biggest sports story and biggest sports production in the world for one weekend a year. Tony Hawk and Shaun White are household names. Skateparks are abundant in the United States. And now we have our own big budget 3D movie. Things have come a long way. Rejoice.

Among the highlights of X Games 3D: The Movie:

• Kyle Loza not being as big of an idiot as previously expected
• A glimpse into the life of the greatest skateboarder in the world, Bob Burnquist
• Danny Way airing over the Great Wall of China with a broken ankle
• A Bob Burnquist and Danny Way mega ramp session including a four-wheel drift and a manual on a box over the gap

X Games 3D: The Movie features Shaun White, Danny Way, Bob Burnquist, Ricky Carmichael, Kyle Loza and Travis Pastrana. The movie is narrated by Emile Hirsch.

X Games 3D was released on Friday, August 21 and will be playing in theaters across the country for the remainder of August so make sure you get hooked-up now.
