New Arnette Sunglasses for Fall 2009

Arnette announces the release of five new styles of sunglasses for Fall 2009. The Alter Ego, Agent, Defy, Snap and Wanted seamlessly fuse the best in contemporary street styling with the hard-charging, action sports lifestyle Arnette is rooted in.

All five frames, along with the rest of Arnette’s fashion-forward products, employ the highest-grade polycarbonate lenses available to block out 100% of harmful UV rays. Many styles are offered with polarized lens options, and all Arnette frames are constructed with either high-luster acetate or lightweight yet durable Grilamid nylon plastic.

Arnette Agent Sunglasses

The Agent is a throwback style featuring classic lines, rich acetate frame material, medium sized lenses and a mixed bag of low-key and pop colors to ensure retro-freshness from sun up to sun down. Taylor Knox’s Surf Exercises DVD Now Available

Rip Curl’s Taylor Knox has teamed up with his longtime trainer, Paul Hiniker, and Koastal Media to release Surf Exercises, a DVD aimed to showcase the exact fitness regimen that has made Taylor Knox one of the fittest surfers on the ASP World Tour.

The workout regimen demonstrated in Taylor Knox’s Surf Exercises DVD targets balance as the center piece of advanced strength, speed, and rotational flexibility to not just inspire a more functional body but to make you surf better.

The Jenkinson’s Pro Bodyboard Contest

The 2009 SCION Jenks Pro will go down on September 1-7 at Jenkinson’s Beach in Point Pleasant, NJ. The weather patterns are quite similar to that of the legendary 2005 SCION Jenks Pro, in which Javier Baez took down World Champion Jeff Hubbard. It was the best surf the East Coast and Jenkinson’s Boardwalk has ever seen.

A seven day waiting period, based around the Labor Day Weekend, makes for a very promising event at Jenkinson’s Boardwalk in 2009. As we approach the USBA’s 5th annual event at Jenks Beach, we would like to reflect on the amazing heats it has produced. In our first year in 2004, the current World Champion Damien King beat Jeff Hubbard and 6x World Champion Guilherme Tamega surfed perfect 2-4ft waves at Jenkinson’s Pier in Seaside Heights. Another great battle was in 2007 when Jeff Hubbard battled against Javier Baez. Once again in the final Hubbard beat Baez in the dying moment with a big invert to seal his first Jenks Pro win. Last year’s event saw Hawaii’s style master Spencer Skipper take down Jacob Romero and East Coast rider Brian Stoehr in what was another amazing final. The staff at the USBA could not be happier with the SCION Jenk’s Pro and its many years of success.

Esteemed surf journalist and author of surfing books such as The Surfboard: Art, Style, Stoke, Surfing and the Meaning of Life, Graphic Surf: Decals, Patches, Stickers and Surfing USA!: An Illustrated History of the Coolest Sport of All Time, Ben Marcus, recently wrote a fascinating article entitled The Gates of Paradise - The Beginning of the Fall of the Malibu Ranch: 1905-1907, that highlights the colorful and tumultuous history of Malibu, California in the early 1900’s.

The article, from Malibu Magazine, documents the plight of May Rindge, a wealthy widow that owned all of present day Malibu (13, 315 acres, 21 miles of coastline, from Las Flores Canyon to the Ventura County Line, from Duke’s Restaurant to Neptune’s Net) and seeked to protect her land from trespassers and government encroachment. And while widows of the early 20th century might not float your boat, this article includes guns, brushfires, squatters, old-fashioned cowboys and, what some could argue, the first Malibu local. Valleys Go Home used to be followed by gun shots!

The article is a must read for anyone interested in the history of Malibu, coastal access in Malibu or surfing in Malibu. It is also a thought-provoking article from a property rights perspective as we get to examine the progress (or retraction) of property rights with respect to government meddling.
