2009 ASP WCT Hang Loose Santa Catarina Pro at Vila Beach in Imbituba, Brazil

Kelly Slater won the fourth stop on the Association of Surfing Professionals 2009 World Tour, The Hang Loose Santa Catarina Pro at Vila Beach in Imbituba in Brazil.

The final day of the contest went down at the beach break in slightly overhead mushy waves, light wind and sunny skies.

The road to the finals for nine-time ASP World Champion Kelly Slater included a win versus familiar foe, Taj Burrow, in the quarterfinals and a victory over former ASP World Champion and fellow Floridian, CJ Hobgood.

The Brazilian crowd was pumped for fellow countryman Adriano de Souza as he marched his way to the finals. De Souza cruised through the quarterfinals with a victory over Bede Durbidge and beat current ASP leader, Joel Parkinson, in the semis.

The final of the Hang Loose Santa Catarina Pro gave the crowd exactly what they wanted – the pairing of Brazilian favorite Adriano de Souza versus the most popular surfer in the world, American Kelly Slater. In a back and forth battle, both surfers squeezed the most out of the lefts on their backhand. Kelly Slater was able to catch the better waves and was able to get more radical on his cutbacks and floaters.
